ThemostcommontypeofbeamexpanderisderivedfromtheGalileantelescopewhichusuallyhasonenegativeinputlensandonepositiveoutputlens,asshowninFigure1.Theinputlenspresentsavirtualbeamfocusattheoutput.Forlowexpansionratios(1.3-20′),theGalileantelescopeismostoftenemployedduetoitssimplicity,smallpackagesize,andlowcost.Figure1iagramofabeamexpander

Thefunctionofabeamexpanderistoreducethedivergenceangleoflaserbeamsandthusmakethefocusedbeamdiametersmaller.
